As the light ever so slowly comes on to show a dark forest with a fire burning brightly, a male voice is heard from the group of four people around the fire though you can’t see who it is speaking.
Leon: The end of humanity is nearing as monsters plague the Earth. No weapon other than love harms them and even then, it is only temporary. I’ve seen people ripped apart, eaten, blood flowing freely and staining the ground no matter where they were. These creatures are trying to be rid of us but there is nothing we can do except hide and hope with all our hearts we aren’t the last beings alive. (lights come on and you see four young adults sitting at the fire, Leon with his arm around Evelyn and Valko with his hand in Orsina’s.)
Valko: Hey, who’s taking first watch?
Orsina: I can take it since it looks like I’m the least exhausted. Though, now that I think about it, Leon, you want to help me gather firewood real fast and later on neither Val or Eve need to risk it at the Waking Hour.
Evelyn: Thanks for the foresight Osie. (pauses in her speech as she turn to look behind herself) Hey, did you hear that?
Valko: (listens and shakes his head) You’re being crazy Sis, there’s nothing out there right now. Now, lay down and get some sleep before you have watch duty.
Evelyn: You’re such a jerk Val. Leon, do you have the bags?
Leon: Hold on sugar, I’ll get the tent out.
Orsina: You know, it’s sad that you two can’t get married. You must have been so devastated when these creatures emerged.
Evelyn: I was completely torn Osie. Our wedding would have only been a week away if it weren’t for these damned monsters.
Valko: I’m going to go help Leon with the tent girls, you can have your cry session.
Evelyn: I still don’t see what you see in him Osie, he’s so blah!
Orsina: He’s your brother, of course you don’t get it.
Evelyn: I guess in retrospect you are doing me a favor by taking his attention because then I don’t have to deal with his nonsense as often.
Orsina: You two are more alike than you know. I mean honestly, how can you not be with being twins?
Evelyn: I hate it when you do that. I’m nothing like that…Did you hear that?
Orsina: This time I did, yeah. I didn’t think it was that late out.
Evelyn: Nor did I but apparently it is. Help me please?
Orsina: Of course, here, hand me the extra lighter and we’ll meet in the middle. (start making a torch around their camp as the boys as setting up the tent on the other side of the small clearing)
Valko: I am sorry about your wedding dude. The girls were talking about it.
Leon: Yeah, so am I. All that stress over her ring and asking her and then a month before our wedding, these creatures start eating the world into darkness.
Valko: I personally think that they’re aliens…
Leon: Ha, you and aliens Val, it’s always about aliens or ET. Now, hand me the hammer so I can get this stake in.
Valko: Maybe if we can find an abandoned house near here we can board it and get you a semi-wedding? I’ve seen enough movie to be able to do it.
Leon: Maybe, if we survive tonight. Do you know exactly where we are?
Valko: (pulls out map from his back pocket) We should be near to Salem now. We passed the highway a few days back and so it’s the next on our list. Did you hear that?
Leon: Yeah, I think the girls did too because they are starting to place the torches around. I’ve got this almost done, why don’t you get the blood bags and go set the trail?
Valko: Sure, I’ll be back.
Evelyn: Is he going to set the trail?
Leon: Yeah, he is. He’ll be fine, we scouted before we set camp. (growls sound and all of the sudden, Valko runs back into the clearing)
Valko: Grab your weapons and we need to run! (hears Orsina scream) DAMN IT!
Orsina: They are closing in! I saw them when I went to find those blackberries we found earlier. From what I saw, they are surrounding us.
Leon: Guess we fight then. (they wait and in the background, you can see black creatures moving in the shadows of the forest)
Orsina: You two run and see if Salem has a safe house. We’ll throw them off the trail as long as we can.
Evelyn: No, we won’t leave you behind Osie!
Leon: I…come on Eve, we need to go!
Evelyn: Fine, but we better see you in Salem!
Valko: I’m sorry that this is how it’s going to end. I had hoped to propose to you after my sister’s wedding. I love you Orsina.
Orsina: I love you too, with all my heart Valko. (They share a kiss and embrace as the shadows get closer and the stage blacks out to then show Evelyn and Leon taking a fast break from having sprinted through the forest, a dull morning light barely making an appearance through the trees)
Evelyn: Do you think they’ll make it Leon?
Leon: I do babe, I do. We’ll see Val and Osie by dinner tonight.
Evelyn: Leon…(the air is still until a faint growling pierces the silence and they both turn to look and then vague shadows are seen) They didn’t make it.
Leon: Nor will we if we keep standing here. Come on, we need to keep moving.
Evelyn: Do we know which direction to be going?
Leon: Damn, no I didn’t ask. Hold on! (takes off shirt and throws it into the forest)
Evelyn: As much as I appreciate the view…
Leon: It’ll throw them off our scent for a couple seconds. Come on, you do the same in about a minute after we run for our lives a bit.
Evelyn: You just want to see me shirtless.
Leon: Well, it would certainly bring my spirits up.
Evelyn: Amongst other pieces of your anatomy.
Leon: I wasn’t even thinking of that.
Evelyn: Of course not, but I’ll have you know I was.
Leon: We need to keep moving, they are getting closer. (run and soon they reach endless water)
Evelyn: We’re trapped!
Leon: Crap, we went too far east! This is probably a bay or the ocean.
Evelyn: Leon! They are right there!
Leon: No…
Evelyn: They didn’t make it Leon, my poor brother…
Leon: I love you Evelyn.
Evelyn: I love you too Leon.
The creatures, shadows in the distance of the forest in various forms of ragged humanoid shape, are advancing towards the couple, who are hugging and facing their doom head on. The lights fades and then all four of their voices ring out in one last message)
Leon, Orsina, Valko, Evelyn: We didn’t know it but we were the last humans alive. The love we had for each other wasn’t enough as they took us all down. We did what we could but unfortunately, they won. We had hoped that our love would be the victorious, just like in the movies, but in reality, the Universe had other plans for the last four humans, the last of love on Earth. It told us to go to hell.
The End
